Still have questions?
1. What is a functional trainer, and what is it for?
A functional trainer is a cable machine that works the whole body through pulling and pressing movements. You’ll find them in commercial gyms and garage gyms alike — for lat pulldowns, curls, triceps pushdowns, and much more.
2. What’s the advantage of cable training?
Constant tension through the full range of motion, better coordination, and a huge range of exercises. Resistance adjusts in small steps, so it works for beginners and experienced lifters alike.
3. What exercises can I do?
Lat pulldowns, cable crossovers, curls, triceps pushdowns, rows, shoulder press. Depending on the model, leg work like adduction and abduction as well.
4. What should I look for when buying?
Frame stability and build quality, the load rating, how the pulleys adjust, and what handles come with it. And make sure it fits the space you have.
5. Do functional trainers work in a garage gym?
Yes. Compact models give you a lot of exercises in a small footprint, and depending on the model they mount to the wall or stand free.
