Iron Plates

1. What are the advantages of cast iron plates?

Cast iron / steel: The classic. Durable, usually the most affordable, and thin, so they store in less space and you can fit more of them on the bar. That makes them the plate of choice for heavy loads.

2. What are the advantages of bumper plates?

Bumper plates are built for weightlifting and functional training. The thick rubber lets you drop them from overhead — after a snatch or clean and jerk — without damaging the floor, the barbell, or the plates. They are much quieter than iron, and because every weight has the same diameter, the bar always sits at the same height. Tough, versatile, and safe.

3. Which bumper plates are best for drops?

For repeated drops from overhead, the High Temp Bumper Plates are the right choice — the material is made for it. Competition Plates are calibrated more precisely and have the lowest bounce, which is what you want on a competition platform but not for repeated high drops.

4. What types of weight plates are there?

Two main types of weight plates, and the difference is the material. Iron plates are tough and compact. Rubber plates come in different hardness grades, protect your floor, and do everything. For the most accurate weight in training and competition, Competition Plates are calibrated to exact weight and standard dimensions.

5. Which plate diameter does ATLETICA use?

All of our weight plates have a 50 mm center hole — the standard in competition and commercial gyms. 50 mm bars carry the most weight, run on bearings for smooth rotation, and give you clean technique.

6. How many plates do I need to start, and which weights?

Start with a set of 10, 25, and 35 lb plates — that covers most exercises. Small 2.5 and 5 lb plates let you fine-tune the load and keep progressing in steady steps. As you get stronger, add 45 and 55 lb plates. Fractional plates are worth having for very small jumps.

7. Are rubber-coated plates better than cast iron?

Each has its place. Bare steel plates are thinner, so more weight fits on the bar — a real advantage on a shorter bar like our Zeta, which is built for tight spaces. They are also usually cheaper. Rubber-coated plates protect the floor and are quieter to set down. Beyond that it’s taste: some lifters want the old-school look of steel, others the cleaner look of rubber-coated plates.

8. What are bumper plates, and do I need them?

Bumper plates are a steel core inside a thick rubber body. You can drop them, bar and all, from overhead without damaging the bar, the plates, or the floor. That makes them essential for weightlifting and functional training. For regular strength training you don’t strictly need them — but they are still quieter.

9. How do I take care of my weight plates?

Cast iron: Wipe off dust and sweat regularly. Light surface rust comes off with vinegar; follow with a little oil or rust protectant.

Rubber or plastic coated: Wipe down with a damp cloth and mild cleaner, and make sure they are dry before you store them.

Bumper plates: Very low maintenance. An occasional wipe is all they need.

10. What’s the best way to store weight plates?

Horizontal plate racks: The Tusker and our floor storage racks keep plates flat on the floor in a small footprint, and you can roll them out to load the bar.

Wall mounts: The Blade and our wall-mounted plate holder get plates, bars, and other gear up on the wall and out of the way.

Vertical plate trees: Our Rhino has six weight posts for all your plates plus vertical storage for two barbells.

On our all-in-one trainers plates store on the built-in weight posts. R7 and R8 racks can take extra weight pins, and the R8 also has a dedicated plate rack.

11. Do I need colored plates? What do the colors mean?

Color on weight plates is mostly a feature of competition and higher-end training plates (usually bumper plates or Competition Plates) and it’s there so you can read the weight at a glance. The color code is the international standard: 25 lb green, 35 lb yellow, 45 lb blue, 55 lb red.
